Manual Boost Controller

Update (8/5/04) Due to problems with the mbc, I have removed it, and installed a Blitz Dual Solenoid Boost Controller (DSBC).

Here are some pics of the manual boost controller that I installed. It is the brass piece near the firewall. The other brass piece is the tee for the boost gauge. (A necessity when using any boost controller, and particularly a manual one.)

The pressure source nipple (points opposite the set screw) on the boost controller attaches to the nipple on the y-pipe, and the actuator nipple (points out the side of the boost controller at a right angle from set screw) on the boost controller goes to the H-fitting, which attaches to both wastegate actuators. All other lines to the factory boost control solenoid were capped off securely. Some information for installation was taken from Turbo Basics.

There are two important things that separate many of the mbc's: 1. having two ball bearings in it, so that if the set screw falls out the boost will go to minimum (if there is no second ball bearing the boost will go to max if the set screw falls out!) the second ball bearing usually also makes for a smoother adjustment because the spring rests on the ball bearing, and not directly on the set screw. 2. having a fine thread set screw so that boost can be accurately adjusted. based on my experience, many mbc's do not have two ball bearings. as for the fine/coarse thread, it seems to be mixed. I know that the JoeP mbc has both of these features, and I am not sure about any others. It is definitely worth a few extra dollars to get these features.
